Enhancements to IMED Offer More Detailed Information About Medical Schools Worldwide
The Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER®) is pleased to announce that an enhanced version of the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) is now available on the ECFMG website at www.ecfmg.org.
IMED was developed and is maintained by FAIMER, which is a non-profit foundation of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG®).
IMED provides an accurate and up-to-date resource of information about international medical schools that are recognized by the government agencies in the countries where the medical schools are located. For most countries, this agency is the Ministry of Health.
A medical school is listed in IMED after FAIMER receives confirmation from the Ministry of Health or other appropriate agency that the medical school is recognized by the Ministry or other agency. FAIMER also updates IMED as information about medical schools is received from Ministries of Health or other appropriate agencies.
The initial version of IMED, released in April 2002, listed the medical school name, address, telephone and fax numbers, title of medical degree awarded, and graduation years, which are the years the school is recognized by the government of the country where the school is located.
The enhanced version of IMED contains the following additional information:
- Name of the university with which the medical school is affiliated (if applicable)
- Medical school website address
- Former official names of the medical school (if applicable)
- Year instruction started
- Language of instruction
- Duration of curriculum
- Entrance examination requirement
- Eligibility of foreign (non-national) students
- Total enrollment
IMED lists medical schools in each country alphabetically by the name of the medical school. Users may search by various fields, including geographic region, country, name of medical school or affiliated university, and the city where the school is located. Detailed search instructions are provided.
